The tremendous success of Disneyland soon required increased capacity for the Disneyland Railroad. This time, Walt Disney wanted to buy an original loco and restore it for use in his park. He found a suitable loco at the Godchaux Sugar Company in Louisiana: a retired 0-4-4 Forney, which had been built in 1895 at the Baldwin Locomotive Works in Philadelphia. Disney had the loco converted to a 2-4-4 and put it in service on March 28, 1958. The loco was named after Walt Disney’s close friend Fred Gurley, who then was the president of the Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe Railway. The mild climate of California and Florida enables the Disneyland Railroad to operate numerous open cars year-round. This starter set contains the “Fred Gurley” in its current livery with two differently numbered cars of the “300 series.” Use this set to offer rides around your own theme park. The model of the steam loco features a two-axle drivetrain and a tender supported by a two-axle truck. Large lanterns and the famous cow catcher complete the model. The opening doors invite you to examine the detailed cab with valves and gauges. Directional lighting and a smoke generator add to the fun. The two sightseeing cars are equipped with a roof and seats, inviting passengers to step aboard. A complete track circle (1290 mm dia.), safety-approved 1 amp power pack, quick-connect cable and figures also are included in this set. |
